EDITORIALFind information before starting an investigation It is good practice to start an investigation with a survey of existing knowledge and experience. Such a survey can be conducted in several ways. You may consult your library and look for textbooks, reports or journals dealing with the subject of your investigation. You may ask a colleague to give you some hints where you can find relevant information. You can make a Google search or drop a question on the Coastal_List: http://www.coastal.udel.edu/coastal/coastal_list.html . ENCORA offers some additional options to find the information you need. One option is consulting the Coastal Wiki (www.encora.eu/wiki), which already contains several hundreds of articles providing an introduction to a broad range of coastal topics with references or weblinks to useful background documents. Another option is to contact your national coastal coordination office or simply send a message to info@encora.eu. It will help you swiftly to find colleagues in Europe who are working on topics similar to the topic of your investigation. This service is free and does not engage you to establish a cooperation with all the persons identified through the ENCORA contact search. The ENCORA contact search can identify potential partners among several thousand coastal professionals throughout Europe working on a great variety of coastal and marine topics as practitioner, policy maker or scientist. There is a very good chance that you will find in this way some colleagues who can help you to make a successful start with your investigation.

![]() ![]() ENCORA Websearch FacilityThere are thousands of websites with coastal information. Enter a coast-related keyword as search term in Google and you will generally obtain several million hits. Most of these hits don’t provide relevant information for coastal professionals, who are looking for information to tackle a technical problem or a practical issue. Finding the most relevant information on the Internet is often not easy if you don’t have any clues where to look. ENCORA is developing on the Coastal Portal (www.encora.eu) a service that may help coastal professionals to find relevant information. This service is a websearch facility browsing a selected set of coastal websites using the Google technology (www.encora.eu/websearch.php). The selected websites provide information of high quality covering a broad range of ICZM-relevant topics. We would like to ask your help to improve this websearch service. If you are aware of important websites providing ICZM-relevant information, satisfying the previous selection criterion, we would greatly appreciate if you could send us the webaddress (email to info@encora.eu). We only accept websites in English that are well maintained and we don’t accept websites with advertisements. Websites with highly relevant high quality information on a specific IZCM topic will be linked to the Coastal Wiki, i.e. added as external link in the Wiki article dealing with this topic. We welcome your help! ![]() ![]() FP7 interestShortly after publication of the 1st call of the FP7 Environment programme, ENCORA has organised an enquiry among European research groups to dress for each topic an interest list facilitating the establishment of consortia. We received responses from over hundred research groups from all over Europe. The Interest List was published on the ENCORA portal in March (http://www.encora.eu/documents/Fp7interest.pdf). ENCORA has received positive feedback from several partners who benefitted from the list to form research consortia. Besides, some partners called on the ENCORA Contact Search Service to perform a dedicated partner search for a particular topic. The ENCORA coordination offices conducted a successful search for the topic 'Tourism and Coastal Environment at European Islands', which resulted in the establishment of the TRITON consortium, gathering 12 partners from 6 EU countries, led by Prof. Nicole von Lieberman and Thorsten Albers from TU Hamburg-Harburg, Germany. We conclude that the establishment of the FP7 Interest List was an initiative worthwhile to reconduct for the 2nd FP7 call. We would be happy to receive feedback on your experience with the FP7 Interest List (info@encora.eu), eventually with suggestions for improving the effectiveness of this service. ![]() ![]() Use of ENCORA for dissemination of project resultsProjects with EU co-funding have to report about the dissemination of their results among potentially interested parties throughout Europe. Many national or local projects may also have an interest to disseminate their results within a wider European audience. ENCORA offers several free services to assist in the dissemination of project results. Coastal Wiki You may produce an overview article of the major project outcome for publication in the Coastal Wiki (www.encora.eu/wiki). Please consult the guidelines for Wiki articles (referenced on the Main Page) before preparing such an article! In this article you may introduce a link to a well-maintained website containing more detailed background information. The Coastal Wiki will be officially launched in June and is intended to become a major information source for coastal and marine professionals. Coastweb Database You may upload important background documents in the Coastweb database (www.coastweb.info). The CoastWeb archive performs a complimentary function to the Wiki, having an online archive capable of storing all kinds of digital information. Users can upload and access files online. Furthermore, being compliant with the Open Archives Initiative, it provides a gateway to over 130 online archives around the world. It has a search function which is especially tailored to the needs of the coastal and marine community. ENCORA E-news The ENCORA E-news appears every month and is distributed among a few thousand coastal professionals through coordination offices in 13 European countries and 5 non-European countries. You may submit a short article (less than 200 words) about your project results to the ENCORA E-news editorial staff, for inclusion in the international section of the E-news. If you want to call on ENCORA for the dissemination of your project results among European coastal professionals by any of the above mechanisms you may contact info@encora.eu. ![]() ![]() Swedish-Danish Coastal MeetingThe start of May saw a mutual Swedish-Danish meet & greet event in the Øresund region linked by the bridge called Øresundsbron. The meeting started in Malmö, where the county of Skåne hosted the morning programme. The speakers talked about Swedish coastal issues representing the county, the municipality, the Swedish Geotechnical Institute and private consultants. In the afternoon an excursion took the participants through Malmö harbour, residential areas and the remarkable Turning Torso. The group then proceeded to Copenhagen and had dinner in Nyhavn. The next morning, GEOCENTER Copenhagen hosted presentations from the Danish coastal authorities, researchers on coastal morphology and marine biology and consultants. The afternoon programme took the group to the Copenhagen Harbour Swim Baths. The day ended at Amager Beach Park, which is a newly developed beach project just off the city centre very close to the Copenhagen airport. Approx. 50 people participated in the event which was a success and another similar event is under consideration. ![]() ![]() Coastal Web AtlasesThe Coastal and Marine Resources Centre (CMRC) of the University College Cork and Oregon State University are pleased to announce the release of the report on Potentials and Limitations of Coastal Web Atlases, result of a workshop held in July 2006. The report can be downloaded from http://workshop1.science.oregonstate.edu/final_rpt The report examines state-of-the-art coastal web atlas developments, shares lessons learned, determines future needs in mapping an informatics for the coastal practitioner community and identifies potential opportunities for collaboration. ![]() ![]() UPCOMING EVENTSNCK INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM 14 - 15 June 2007 IJmuiden, Netherlands In honour of the 15-year anniversary of the Netherlands Centre for Coastal Research (NCK) the annual NCK days are this year upgraded to an international symposium, under the auspices of EncoraNL.
