EDITORIALCOASTAL WIKI LAUNCH The coastal and marine professional wikipedia Coastal Wiki was formally launched at the 15-year anniversary symposium of the Dutch Coastal Research Network in IJmuiden, by Andrew Chadwick, Wiki coordinator, and Job Dronkers, ENCORA coordinator. This is just a little more than six months after the Valencia Theme Conference, where the first agreements were made on the Wiki principles, outline and authorship of initial contributions. During these six month many renowned experts have written several hundred articles, covering a great variety of coastal and marine topics. The number of contributions has exceeded our expectations and this success has resulted in an earlier launch than initially foreseen. With the present content the Coastal Wiki is already a useful source of information for coastal and marine professionals. For the next months an additional effort is planned to improve the quality and the coherence of the present content by tuning and interlinking articles dealing with related topics. This effort is made possible thanks to funds granted by one of the Wiki users, the Dutch Directorate for Water Management, Rijkswaterstaat. The Coastal Wiki has been opened for unrestricted reading two months ago. The recent Wiki launch implies that any coastal or marine professional may now obtain an editing authorisation after registration in the ENCORA contact database. Online registration will be possible after summer; till then you may register by sending an email to info@encora.eu or by contacting your national network coordinator. ![]() National news in this issue

![]() ![]() Paris Theme Conference on European Action PlansFrom 5 to 7 December, ENCORA will organise a major conference in Paris on the preparation of a future European coastal and marine research agenda, which will be elaborated in European Action Plans. The conference is dedicated to the identification of key issues for advancing the sustainable management of our coastal zones and for which knowledge progress can only be achieved through in-depth research investments. The European Action Plans are a major deliverable of ENCORA requested by the European Commission. They are complementary to the Coastal Wiki, which reflects existing knowledge and experience and therefore serves as a reference for establishing the Action Plans. A call for pre-registration will be issued in the first week of July. We expect a strong participation but we cannot accommodate more than180 participants; we also aim at a balanced representation over themes and countries. Online registration is possible via the coastal portal. The conference will be prepared during the months October and November through a number of thematic internet forums, to which you will be invited to participate upon pre-registration. ![]() ![]() EurOCEAN2007 conference and Aberdeen declarationHow can the European coastal and marine research community contribute to the elaboration and implementation of a European Maritime Policy? This was the central theme of the EurOCEAN conference in Aberdeen on June the 22nd, organised jointly by the European Maritime Task Force and the Marine Board of the European Science Foundation. The result of this conference is reflected in the Aberdeen Declaration, adopted at the end of the conference. The Aberdeen declaration calls for an Integrated European Marine and Maritime Science, Research, Technology and Innovation Strategy and for adequate resources to support specialised infrastructures, data collection, information management and capacity building. The declaration takes up the recommendations expressed in the ENCORA reaction to the Green Paper, in particular the need for foresight activities to identify new and emerging scientific challenges and opportunities (European Action Plans), the need to enhance knowledge and technology transfer and innovation through cross-sectoral, multinational and interdisciplinary research cooperation and networking and the need for developing scientific and technology capacity. The chairman, Mr Heffernan, concluded the conference with an urgent call on the European community of coastal and marine professionals to forward the realisation of the principles expressed in the declaration. ENCORA will take up this challenge by fulfilling its structuring role acknowledged in the communication of the Commission to the European Parliament on ICZM in Europe. ![]() ![]() Young Professional Exchange ProgramENCORA is the European platform for sharing knowledge and experience among the coastal and marine communities of science, policy and practice. One of the services provided by ENCORA is the Young Professional Exchange Program. This programme has been designed especially for young researches, practitioners and policymakers who are at the start of their career or research in coastal zones. ![]() ![]() YPEP triggers new cooperationEarlier this year, Katherine Cronin, a PhD student of University College Cork in Ireland, took advantage of ENCORA’s YPEP to visit Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands. Katherine’s PhD research focuses on simulating morphological changes in estuarine environments using different modelling approaches. Katherine wanted to learn how to use and apply a Delft model (ASMITA) to an Irish estuarine environment. She found the exchange invaluable and it greatly sped up the learning process - “I learned a lot about the programming and theoretical background of the model, studied many of its applications and discussed ways in which the code and schematization of the model should be adapted for my research. The ability to discuss these issues in person was so productive”. As a result of the visit, discussions are underway regarding a collaborative experiment with colleagues there. Faster progress, better understanding and future collaborative research plans were the result of a successful visit thanks to the Young Professional Exchange Program! ![]() ![]() Upcoming coastal and marine eventsIn previous issues of eNews you could find a selection of interesting coastal and marine events scheduled for the coming months. EUCC – The Coastal Union keeps a more comprehensive and well-updated list on its website. This list includes all the events organized by or in cooperation with ENCORA partners. The event list on the ENCORA Coastal Portal will therefore be replaced by above link to the EUCC website. ![]() | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||
