NETWORK AMBASSADORSNetworking requires special skills, but in the first place it requires the recognition that networking is serious work. Important achievements generally involve many people; success has many fathers, is a popular saying. Even in the age of Internet, the effectiveness of spreading information strongly depends on people knowing people and people talking to people. If you share what you have heard with ten people (first step), who share this information with ten other people (second step), and so on, then in four to five steps all coastal professionals in Europe are informed. Network ambassadors play an essential role in ENCORA, in several ways. They help the coordination offices with the search of potential partners for creating European networks on specific issues on the request of an ENCORA member. They involve coastal professionals in the development of the Coastal Wiki, the coastal and marine Internet encyclopaedia. They transmit to the coordination offices practical knowledge and information for dissemination within the ENCORA network. ENCORA ambassadors therefore are crucial nodes for enriching the shared knowledge resource of the coastal and marine professional communities in Europe. Being an ENCORA network ambassador contributes to strengthening your personal network and to enhancing your value for your organisation. If you want to become an ENCORA network ambassador you should contact your national coordination office or just send a message to info@encora.org. ![]() National news in this issue

![]() ![]() SPICOSAAt the Spicosa kick-off meeting and at the 1st annual ENCORA meeting the Steering Committees of both projects have decided to work closely together. SPICOSA is the acronym for the FP6 Integrated Project Science-Policy Integration for Coastal System Assessment. It will provide a conceptual and practical system analysis framework (SAF) for dealing with coastal policy issues. This generic SAF will be developed in concert with 18 case studies in different European coastal zones. SPICOSA will help ENCORA in the development of the Coastal Wiki by producing Wiki articles on practical knowledge generated in the project. In this way important experience from the SPICOSA case studies and the SAF development will be widely disseminated among European professionals. ENCORA will organise a contact search for the SPICOSA case studies to connect them with relevant experience elsewhere and with similar studies ongoing in other projects around the European coastal zones. SPICOSA will also share the ENCORA Contact Database; the extension of this database with contact information from the SPICOSA partners and their stakeholders will greatly enhance its value. ![]() ![]() SHORT COURSE ON SHORE PROTECTION STRATEGIESThe Gruppo Nazionale per la Ricerca sull’Ambiente Costiero (GNRAC), in collaboration with the Italian ENCORA network RIC and a few other coastal projects, will organise a training event on Shore Protection Strategies. This short course, aimed at young researchers and technicians from the Public Administration, will illustrate several shore protection methods, with special regard toward soft and innovative techniques that are applicable to the Mediterranean coasts. The training will be held in English language, and will take place in Marina di Massa (Italy) from 17 to 20 September 2007. It will be articulated in both theoretical classes and field trips along the coast. On 21 September 2007, there will be a national scientific meeting on the subject of innovative techniques for shore defence - an additional event to which participants of this course are welcome to attend.
